So it's time to gain your Montana Teacher Certification? Let's take this look at the simple process:

Traditional Approach for the Montana Teacher Certification

1. Have or earn your degree from college
2. Successfully complete a supervised teaching experience either as part of an accredited professional educator preparation program or successfully complete one year of teaching experience in a state accredited elementary and/or secondary school district.
3. Submit fingerprints and background check. $34 fee payable to Montana Department of Justice
4. Submit the following:
   • Completed Application
   • Official transcripts, degrees, and school credits
   • $36 Check/Money Order payable to Montana Office of Public Instruction
   • Mail to:
     Educator Licensure Program
     Montana Office of Public Instruction

   • Apply for your renewal

Alternative Approach for the Montana Teacher Certification

Alternatively, you can earn the Montana Teaching Certification to teach in Montana before you complete the teacher education program.  

1. Obviously you must still earn your Bachelors Degree from an accredited university. Ideally, you should always continue your education in efforts to earn a Master’s degree.
2. $24 fee payable to Montana office of Public Instruction
3. Submit fingerprints and background check
4. Provided official transcripts
5. Fill out and complete the Alternative Teaching License Forum
6. Be hired by the Montana school district to earn semester credits
7.  Mail to:
